New Freeworld destination contributes to inner-city rejuvenation

Freeworld Coatings, South Africa’s leading coatings company and the holding company for décor brands Plascon, Midas Earthcote and Hamiltons, among others, is contributing to the rejuvenation of a historical area of Cape Town with the launch of the new Freeworld premises in the Cape Waters Building on Waterkant Street. The newest addition to Cape Town’s Fan Walk backs onto three buildings - the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Gold Museum and the Dutch Embassy, all circa 1780 - and aims to be an inspirational design destination.

CEO Andre Lamprecht explains that the transformation of the building, formerly the Cape Waters Hotel, is a manifestation of Freeworld’s ‘Décor Effect’ philosophy. “We want to demonstrate how even with modest means, it’s possible to transform your life and the value of your property. Freeworld is on a quest to enhance and improve living spaces and lives through our products, ideas and actions.”

The brief was to create something “earthy” and elegantly African, to incorporate glass to convey a sense of transparency and openness and to bring the outside in. In response, architectural firm, Kristof Basson Architects and Freeworld Design Centre head, Lauren Shantall, created a space that is uniquely inspirational. The destination consists of a new design centre, an auditorium, a groundfloor courtyard and Hemelhuijs café, two floors of office space, meeting rooms and a rooftop entertainment area, known as Hemelkant, for the use of clients and guests.

Elements that reflect the company’s brand values were incorporated into the building. Shantall explains, “As the country’s first trade-orientated coatings design destination, the Design Centre demonstrates Freeworld’s commitment to innovation and top quality design, with an interior concept by Tonic Design. The state-of-the-art entertainment and conferencing facilities convey the company’s pursuit of excellence and the use of earthy, natural materials in the office décor such as wood, stone, leather and linen, represent integrity and honesty.”

Shantall collaborated with some of South Africa’s top furniture designers, artists and landscapers to create the unique space, which she describes as ‘an oasis within the freneticism of the city’. The building centres on an open-air courtyard with fountains, waterways, and free Wi-Fi for Freeworld customers. This connects and encourages a natural flow of movement between the Design Centre, the 98 seater auditorium, and the corporate offices and intimate meeting rooms. With the aim to inspire creativity and new ideas in all areas of life, the building also hosts leading foodie Jacques Erasmus’ beautiful new Hemelhuijs café.”

The Freeworld Design Centre is conveniently located along the Fan Walk, at the Cape Waters Building, 71 Waterkant Street.
